Friday thoughts . . .
This week I received sad news. A very good friend of mine was out for a summer afternoon with her daughter. Her daughter was driving and another car crossed the meridian and hit my friend’s vehicle head on. My friend and the driver of the other car died at the scene. Her daughter survived and was released from hospital later that day.
The good news is her daughter survived, the good news is that my friend didn’t suffer for days on life support; the good news is that my friend lived life at a very high level. Her career as a specialist was very successful. She was highly respected in her field. She was well loved, by all who knew her. She was a talented interior designer. She travelled the world. She was quite athletic, an avid skier and wind surfer and she always made me laugh when the most common things escaped her. She lived life fully and was always thinking what’s next. I found it impossible to comprehend that someone I had helped shop last Friday was gone. I dropped off cards and flowers at her home in Pitt Meadows. My mind was playing tricks on me. I almost didn’t leave the flowers and cards as I was wondering what she would be thinking as she read the cards because of course she was coming home from work that evening and everything was just a cruel joke. It wasn’t until her dad, a small, elderly, kind gentleman cried on my shoulder and I felt his pain did it really sink in and I knew that she really was gone from this life.
In my quiet time this week, as I garden or listen to the river, I cannot help but reflect on how abrupt death can be. Questions run rampant in my head. When the sand in the hour glass runs out and the games over what’s left? Where does your life fit in? What do you do to prepare for death? Did you live your life or did you live someone else’s? Does it matter whether you became all that you could be? And who judges? Will your impact in death be smaller or larger in life? How can you really be sure that you did what you set out to do? Was the “doing” that was important or was it the “being” that made the difference? How much of your life did you spend in each? If you knew the impact your life held for others would you live it differently? If you knew you could not fail – what would you do?
I came across this poem and wanted to share it with you:
The Dash by Linda Ellis

When I watched this movie I thought of Hannah and the impact she made to my life over the past fifteen years and the love she showed all her friends. This Friday’s thought is dedicated to you Hania Binder 1956 – 2009. I love you, my friend.

Friday's Thoughts for July 10,2009
Friday thoughts . . .
A couple of days ago my granddaughter Olivia greeting me at the door (after work) with index cards in her hand. She told me she had a quiz to give me and proceeded to read out the instructions.
“Grandma, only answer yes or no – no maybes”, she instructed me.
Question #1. Compared with five years ago, is work now a regular part of evenings and weekends? Do you get irritated if family or friends interrupt work time? hmmm
Question #2. Has work squeezed out time in the community, time with family and exercise time? It's not just temporary; it's the new normal. Does my gradual turn around since RE/MAX count?
Question #3. Do you eat faster, talk faster, walk faster? And do you always feel as if you're “behind” – rushing to catch up? I’m a slow eater.
Question #4. Have back problems and other health issues surfaced because your body is rigid all day long? You can't sleep. I sleep when I’m tired – or was that exhausted? Just kidding.
Question #5. Is your concentration shot? Are you moody, have trouble communicating and are obsessed with small details because you've lost sight of the big picture? I do see the big picture – yeah!!
When she finished, I asked her where she got these questions. She replied, “The Globe and Mail –it was on the table and I read it while having my snack.” Then she looked up with a glint in her eye and announced, “Hey, I wonder what’s a shopaholic? Think they have a quiz? I’m going to google it.” Off she went.
Meanwhile, I wanted to know more. I googled and searched the Globe and Mail edition. Here is what I found.
How to differentiate between a workaholic and someone who's merely working hard.
Reality: There is no typical workaholic, Statscan studies show. Self-described workaholics are no more likely than non-workaholics to be young, highly educated, city dwellers or high-income earners. They are more likely to be in management and trades, be unhappy with their work/life balance – and twice as likely to report they work 50 hours a week or more.
Five warning signs: (Aha! This is Olivia’s source – she just changed up a few words )

How is it that this eleven year old was able to shake my world and make it better at the same time? The Law of Attraction, in its perfection, brought a teacher into my world exactly when I was ready to listen and take action. There is a distinct difference between becoming a master of my work and becoming a workaholic. I decided to do an internal check on my world and found out that over the years my world had shrunk. My centers of influence were fewer and the diversity of activities were at best, minimal. My associations were extremely limited and my focus was almost totally work oriented. I believe an “and” conversation can occur. I’m going to expand my centers of influence and improve my work. I’m going to continue to adjust my time to include more play, more hobbies, more exercise and a still be more effective at work. (Since switching to RE/MAX I have made a huge shift here already,2 holidays, weekends mostly at home gardening.) I’m moving forward on the pathway of the former rather than the latter.
How about you? Are you a Master of your Profession or a Workaholic?
Have a wonderful week!

PS. Education and Social Calendars will be out next week for the balance of the year. RE/MAX jerseys orders will be available next week and anyone with thoughts of attending the RE/MAX Canadian Convention in Banff this November there will be a sign up sheet so I can put hotel rooms on hold before they are sold out. You are the BEST! Thank-you for being part of my world!

Friday's Thoughts June 26
Friday thoughts . . .
Last week my thoughts were about creating a Painted Picture and how you lean into the future to reverse engineer everything you want in life. This week I’m sending you my first draft. Then we add the management, staff and agent's perspectives into this and create our Painted Picture for our Company.
My Painted Picture
– leaning out three years into the future – it is now 2012
Overall: My dreams unfold in front of my eyes. My companies are rated as the best places to work in Canada. Agents and staff want to work with us because we are so knowledgeable, supportive and fun. We are acknowledged within our franchise as leaders in our field. Our staff and agents are in alignment with our values, beliefs and especially our vision. It is always a “can do” attitude that prevails. We have the right people on the bus, in the right seats. Those who are no longer a “fit” are let go with respect and support. Our staff and agents go out of their way to appreciate and recognize each other. Through practicing this, they have become the staff and agents who are the most sought after in the industry. We are excited to go to work. It is a really fun place to be! The atmosphere in the offices inspires us all to think outside the box and to constantly improve. We are learning based – bringing in top instructors to teach. Our agents and staff deserve the best and we deliver it. Our offices are full and we have a waiting list. Money flows freely to all of us – we are money magnets. We have created ways to profit share with our agents through activities that will enhance their careers and fun activities. We have quarterly retreats where we review all our key attributes including our P & L’s and budget items and strategize for the future. We are accountable to helping everyone on the team succeed.
I spend time coaching and consulting rising stars. I am relaxed and in great health. I am pleased with my improving exercise program. I get to spend three – four days a week doing personal items because our work team is so dynamic.
Success: I am blessed everyday to have great people in my life and more coming into my life as we grow and build out our dreams in earth school. I am fully engaged in the success of the people I work with. I am building my world so large that all of us have success. I have the ability to attract the right people on the bus and in the right seats. This atmosphere is fuelled by love, compassion and a “can do” attitude. We are powered by successfully empowering our unlimited beliefs. Our staff’s support for the agents and ownership is the best in the industry. They have created the key environment for our agent’s success. I have a feeling of excitement inside. We are doing things that no one believed possible for this industry and we do them regularly. We now have over 250 agents in 5 offices. Our staff run the companies with the precision of a drill squad and with the love, patience and wisdom of a grandparent. I successfully have reduced my time inside my business down to three days allowing me to focus on other activities such as family, friends, my home, travelling, education, community events. I work and think 6 months into the future, yet live in a focused present. I have found success with my weight/ exercise routines and now create best health everyday.
How I feel: I look and feel happy and relaxed. I smile all the time. I am truly at peace with life. It feels great to make a difference in lives and to create a system that will perpetuate that in the real estate industry. I feel like I am in Disneyland. I love dropping in to the offices. Positivity surrounds me. I feel like I was born to do this work. I feel empowered and fully engaged. I feel like I have created a legacy that can be recreated over and over again.
Mentor Board of Advisors: I am learning and growing. I attract great teachers into my world. I communicate effectively the ideas and teachings that resonate with me to my staff and agents. We have focus groups who get together to sit like keepers of the vision and we work on best practices of implementation. I am being consulted by leaders in business. I also take the wisdom from business and cultural leaders who have written great books and recorded great DVD’s & CD’s. I network through several Social Networks such as Linked in and Facebook.
Culture & Spirit: Our culture engages the spirit to respond to life in a positive manner. We do not compromise our values. Our staff and agents are engaged and know that each makes a difference to the success of the company. We are learning based and accountable to our word, our principles, our values and our beliefs. We have high integrity and are prepared to do not just the legally right thing but also the morally right thing. We believe in win-win. Our conversations are about concepts and ideas. We brain storm perfect outcomes because we are outward focused. We want to grow our lives large. We all understand and use the power of daily written positive recognition with each other. We are grateful for our opportunities. My company’s spirit is a reflection of mine which is growing everyday in a positive way. We identify challenges quickly and outward focus to resolution. We understand the power of attraction. We help more people attain their dreams than any other real estate company. Our results create our image. Our hearts and our strategies drive the bus. We are skilled professionals. We make culturally based decisions. Agents and staff must grow to stay in culture
Brand/Image: We have taken a strong brand name in real estate and created, with our team, a focused environment for success based on unlimited beliefs and success attitudes. Our alignment with our franchise draws the success of the franchise towards us. We attend and support all our company’s and franchise’s functions. Our clients are attracted to us because of our successful sales results. We are smart negotiators. We have doubled our Market Share yearly. We are wealthy in our attitude, and our earning power is limitless. We pay it forward. Our personal as well as our work lifestyle is to leave things better than before. We set the benchmark for multi level success in a real estate company. We have a strong presence in our community and continually build and support the communities we live in.
Communication: I don’t mask the truth. I don’t delay the conversations that need to happen to move us forward. I do have respect and come from my heart when I have these conversations. I ask a lot of questions as I know that self discovery is the quickest teacher. We help each other see more than one color on the beach ball. We write down things worth communicating. We have weekly meetings to communicate successes and points in time. We acknowledge success and fill each other’s buckets on a regular basis. We are honest. We are concise, direct and respectful in our fierce conversations. We have developed systems to effectively listen when there is more than one idea to be communicated. We respect that communication skills can be developed.
Leadership: We believe in win-win. Our decisions are based on love not fear. Our staff and agents are driven to us because of our transparency. We are in a constant state of becoming. We strive to be the best and produce results without giving up what we stand for. Our principles, our values, our vision and our mission are our foundation. We focus time on developing our leadership skills within. We begin that leadership begins with leadership of self first. We are servant leaders to ourselves as well as each other and our clients. We model our leadership after great business leaders who are in alignment with our culture. Clients are attracted to us because we are well known as the best place to get help when looking to buy or sell real estate. Our leadership gets out of their own way, to see further down the journey. Our leadership stay in curiosity. Our leadership creates support not rescue. We celebrate success everyday.
Customer Service: We create “wow” positive experiences where ever we go. We are generous. We exceed our client’s experiences and we have the testimonies to prove it. We are outcome focused. We add the “human touch”. Our systems leave no one out.
Programs: We create timely educational events. We are a learning based
culture. Our programs are branded and copy written by our sister company. We now plan one year out. Our goals are completed and shared each December. We share our events calendars in December for the following year. All our systems are written down and implemented. Our staff buys in fully. Any changes are signed off by ownership prior to implementation. We are a transparent company. Other companies come to learn from us. We are always in touch with all our agents. Our programs run so smoothly that no one would know they are actually systems as they happen so naturally.
Systems: Are all written down and can be easily followed. They are implemented and working. They are changeable as long as the ideas have been approved in writing. Our systems are taught regularly. Mastery is rewarded. Our systems leverage our daily tasks.
Media: We spread the good word of our success as well as our community work on a regular basis. We regularly review our websites and social network activity. We acknowledge success. We actively use our corporate media presence to enhance our image and availability for new clients.
Profitability: I make a lot of money. I bring great value to a lot of people. I help a lot of other people make a lot of money. I love what I do. My income comes in from a series of passive income ventures and some ventures that are not so passive. I share my profits with staff and agents in ways that will enhance their lives and careers. My earnings increase by 50% every year. I am semi retired. My companies are all very profitable. We are exceeding our profit goals on a regular basis. We change our staff and agents lives through our unique profit sharing system. We regularly give back to our communities. Our administration is well run. Our books are clean and accurate.
Family & Friends: I live in abundance. I have many friends in my world and a few who are very close to me. My family comes before my business. I spend time each week with my family and invite people for Sunday dinners on a regular basis. We celebrate life often. We go on fun holidays together. I selectively choose to remove negativity from my life. I have learned that if they want to hold onto negativity then we are not in alignment. I also enjoy quiet time to myself where I can brainstorm and reflect.
Please send me your Painted Pictures as soon as you can. Creating your Painted Picture and sharing is a true win-win activity. You are the very BEST! Thank-you for being in business with RE/MAX results realty.
