Friday thoughts . . .
December and January are often the time when people sit down to figure out what they want their following year to look like. They review what took place in the past year and make plans for the future. They know for sure, that all things being equal, next year will look very much like this year did. Some people live their whole lives with the same year after year with only minor blips on the radar. While others, look at the next year as a really BIG opportunity to live their best year ever!!
Last year I made some pretty significant “changes”. By having the courage to change I learned a lot. I recognized how grateful I am to have beliefs that allow me to be strong as I am, emotionally. I recognized how grateful I am to have a very solid core of people who love and believe in me. Each of you make me a better me. I recognized how much your beliefs affect me – no one succeeds alone. I also recognized that change creates new opportunities. Our mind set to a large extent determines whether we succeed or not. Our beliefs determine our mind set. Many of you have experienced similar experiences with mind set and your own belief structure, whether it has been the ending or beginning of a relationship or a new venture or a holiday. If you believe you will be successful – you usually are.
As I reflect over the past year, affiliating with RE/MAX created change. This year our company reduced significantly in the number of agents, yet we grew in overall production and our per agent production went through the roof! We had months with higher production than we ever had with almost two hundred agents. Our average agent’s production rose significantly. We have streamlined systems with higher success. Less has been more. One of my greatest goals was that we provide more value than any other real estate company both to our agents and from our agents to their clients. Our company will be a magnet for other like minded individuals because we have created a business that resonates with their values. They may or might not have already achieved the success they want, they do have the beliefs and actions that will allow them to succeed. Their success will add to our success. I hear what great things our agents have done to help their clients attain their dream homes or to sell when the process isn’t as smooth as we would wish it could be. Our agents are learning based – they are true professionals – they know what they know and what they don’t and know where to go for help. I am really proud to be part of this office. Our agents create a culture of support for each other. While we enjoy each other’s company we also enjoy many outside interests. The rah rah is inward, not so much outward. Our culture is maturing. We have a very solid, strong core. Each and every one of us counts: agent, staff, management – we are a team.
I created change in my personal world this year – a family vacation in Disneyland, time to garden, more time for family & friends, learning about scrap booking and relearning how to have a full night’s sleep and what it feels like to wake up, naturally. To some, it doesn’t sound like much for me, it is huge. As of December 1st, I’m adding exercise and healthy eating to my choices.
This year, I learned that to live the life you want and deserve - you must first believe you are worth it and deserve it. You must believe you can do it. Finally, and perhaps the most critical step - you must be prepared to take the action necessary to create it.
Your individual success contributes much more than you’d ever imagine to everyone who is close to you. Success is an ongoing process that continues for as long as we pursue our goal. Opportunities occur constantly and we can choose to accept or reject them. Some move us closer to the life we want, some take us further away. Our Beliefs are our guide to deciding which opportunities we will choose. This year will you use powerful unlimited beliefs to choose opportunities for your best year ever? Make 2010 your year – make it your BEST year ever –a 365 day journey! You deserve it, you are worth it and you can do it! Step up and make it happen – we all will grow from it!

Friday Thoughts - Accountability
Have you ever wondered where your day went? Are you able to stay focused and are you nailing your key 20% and moving your life at lightning speed forward? Or do you fall into being the victim and repeating what you do day in and day out accepting the same results, over and over?
Recently, I challenged myself to make a detailed, itemized account at how I spend my week. I included pretty much everything – how long I took to get out the door in the AM, my office activities, even how long I sleep. By doing this I was able to match up my weekly goals with my accomplishments and then analyze just how much time, I actually spent in my key activities. I accomplish my top five activities and I stay laser focused on my goals.
One of my goals is to have a more balanced life. I want to experience on a regular basis what it’s like to enjoy my gardens, to read a great book, to sit and watch the river on our new decks, to have a relaxing dinner with friends, to wake up naturally in the AM after a full night’s sleep. Over the past months I take time to practice the art of relaxation. However, when you look at my daytimer - there is rarely more than fifteen minutes that isn’t accounted for. I have still yet to master, the art of goofing off for a whole day.
My #1 goal is to make a larger impact in a shorter span of time. By knowing how I spend my time – helps me understand my beliefs around certain activities and what my subconscious is programmed to create. If I believe I can – I will. The secret is to see things in a way that will empower me towards achieving what I want. Reflecting, how I spend my day vs how I’d prefer to spend my day shows me the limitations in my thought patterns. The journey from my Point A to Point B is really quite simple just not overly easy (or sometimes direct). . . as of yet. However, the clearer my intention, the faster the results will come.
Sometimes, I forget that this is earth school and I have a mission to accomplish within the period I am here. Instead of staying on the true course, I temporarily get side tracked and involved in drama that's around me. I allow myself to become distracted and I find myself on someone else’s path. In most cases, if I stayed true to my own path and off theirs I would have more to offer.
Opportunities are in abundance around us.Each time I say yes to any opportunity. I am saying no to a different opportunity. Taking stock of how we spend our days, allows us to strategize and make choices allowing us to reach our goals, sooner.
Training my mind set to keep moving forward, in the predictable pattern of an accountable individual, can be very enlightening. There is no shortcut, and no grey area to accountability. Either you are accountable or not. Reality shows up – how I respond will depend on my mind set. Being accountable is a choice . . . so is being a victim.
To be accountable I begin by figuring out what the situation is – without attaching emotion – I seek clarity. I then “own it” and get focused on the outcome, I wish to achieve. I look at my options – check out models, systems, strategies – I think in possibilities. I create an action plan and move forward.
When I choose to be a victim, I fight reality, denying it every step of the way. I put the blame on someone or something else. I make up excuses and deflect and eventually resign myself to accepting the status quo. The length of time I perpetuate victim behaviors, determines how long I stay stuck. Some people will spend their whole life as a victim while others will shift. The only way through is to let go and own your part. Sometimes letting go, is the longest journey that a person will ever take.
Whenever I find myself moving towards victim behavior I pull out my gratitude journal and I read out loud all 360 things that I am grateful for. It doesn’t take long for my mind set to shift. Once that happens, accountability rushes in and I move forward.
I’d like to end this thought with a poem from Dr. Heartstill Wilson:
This is the beginning of a new day.
I have been given this day to use as I will.
I can waste it, or use it.
I can make it a day long to be remembered for its joy,
its beauty and its achievements,
or it can be filled with pettiness.
What I do today is important because
I am exchanging a day of my life for it.
When tomorrow comes this day will be gone forever,
but I shall hold something which I have traded for it.
It may be no more than a memory,
but if it is a worthy one I shall not regret the price.
I want it to be gain not loss,
good not evil, success not failure;
in order that I shall not regret the price
that I have paid for it.
Have a powerful week!

Lessons learned from an IRONMAN:
As most of you know I was away from the office for 8 days at the end of August, what you may not know is that I was in Penticton, the site of one of the athletic wonders of the world, the 27th edition of Ironman Canada.
Arriving in town the atmosphere was absolutely electric, the streets were filled with thousands of athletes and there was a feeling of nervous anticipation everywhere. In a few short days would be the culmination of months, for some even years, of training.
This event is an amazing example of “Anything is possible” when it comes to the human spirit.
Set a goal, make the commitment to yourself to do what is necessary to achieve it, take massive action, adapt to and overcome the obstacles that face you along the way, celebrate the ultimate joy of accomplishing what you set out to do!
Swim 3.8 km, Bike 180km, Run 42.2km. In that order, consecutively on the same day!
For those participating (I would say racing or competing but for most the goal is just to finish) there have been countless hours of training at the pool and on the road building the endurance to be able to complete this mammoth task and the speed to ensure they can do it all in under 17hrs. Most of them would have experienced some form of illness or injury along the way but have had the spirit and resilience to carry on and get ready for the big day.
The reality really sets in the afternoon before the race when the athletes check in their bikes and other necessary gear for the race then try to find a way to spend the rest of the day with their feet up “relaxing“ as they await Sunday morning.
Sunday morning starts early as Main Street fills up at 5am with bodies waiting to be marked with their numbers and coated with sunscreen. After one final check of the bike, they all wiggle their way into their wetsuits and make their way to the starting area on the beach.
The start is an amazing spectacle!

There is no courage without first feeling the grip of fear!
Over 2600 wetsuit clad swimmers line up and nervously wait for the horn which signals the 7am start, the largest mass start in triathlon history! It looks like thousands of hungry seals trying to fight for position in a race for their last meal. The huge crowd`s roars soon turn to oohs, aaahs and some nervous tears as friends and loved ones embark on their epic journey. Some describe it as “like being inside a washing machine” where 10,000 limbs bump and kick, churning the water into white foam. As the clock ticks toward the 2 hour and 20 minute time limit to complete the swim leg, hundreds of volunteers `get ready to assist the athletes in their transition from swim to bike. All but 7 who started would make the cut off and be allowed to continue onto the bike course, unfortunately for the first time in the 27 years history of the race an athlete passed away after experiencing difficulties in the swim.
As the swimmers make their way out of the water and rush their way through the transition area, they transform themselves into endurance cyclists setting out to ride 180kms as fast as they can as the cool early morning gives way to the blazing heat of the Okanagan sun. As if the distance and the heat weren`t enough the bike route includes some long steep climbs and the challenging and ever changing Okanagan Valley winds and on this day smoke from the numerous forest fires in the area filled the air.
The Summit of every mountain is reached the same way...one step at a time! (in this case one pedal stroke at a time)

As we drove along the bike course we were witness to numerous flat tires, a few crashes, some mechanical failures and the pain and strain written all over the faces of those who underestimated the difficulty of the route and were just not having a good day. Hundreds of cheering fans and the hordes of volunteers manning the aid stations along the way shout words of encouragement to propel the riders to the finish of the ride.
Nearly 200 would not be able to finish the ride by the 5:30pm time limit or were otherwise not able to continue onto the run course.
The steady stream of riders made their way back into town to lace up their running shoes and run their weary legs out onto the road for the final test of the day. A Marathon!
The crowds gathered along the entire run route to support and encourage and the bleachers and streets near the finish overflowed with excited spectators awaiting the finishers. The first finishers crossed the line while many of the others were still out on the bike course! The overall winner this year, Jordan Rapp, stopped the clock at 8hrs 25minutes and 13 seconds.
After the adventure out on the bike course I hurried back to the finish line for the start of my shift as a Finish line volunteer. This is the best place to experience the essence of this race! Every athlete as they cross the finish line is greeted by a pair of volunteers, also known as “catchers”.
The finish line is an unbelievable cross section of emotions. The first is the absolute elation of finishing this test of human endurance, sometimes punctuated by shouts and pumping fists, sometimes by tears. This is usually followed closely by the reality that the body is FINISHED! Some collapse at the finish line, some lose complete control of their bodily functions (which can be messy) and some need immediate medical attention. There are severely cramped muscles, overheated and dehydrated bodies but most important of all is the incredible pride of accomplishment each of the 2381 finishers share.
Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all.
I finished my time as a volunteer at 7:54pm when I greeted my wife Deanna at the finish line, she had achieved her goal of finishing in the daylight and shaved over 40 minutes off of her previous personal best at this event. The fear and concern of all of the “what ifs?” of the day gave way to the pride and joy of being in the presence of achievement at a very high level, I am very proud of what she has accomplished! Overcoming a case of the flu and a serious bike crash in the last 6 weeks before the race to come back and finish her 3rd Ironman in style!
We have many friends and acquaintances, and have made many new friends, who participate in this event and others like it. I am proud to know them all and find inspiration in their commitment, their amazing endurance and ability to overcome adversity.
As the clocked ticked toward the end of the day another true inspiration arrived at the finish line, the 79 year old Sister Madonna Buder (a Nun from Spokane) who has finished Ironman an amazing 35 times became the oldest woman to ever finish an Ironman event.
The final official finisher crossed the line with a clocking of 16:59:35 just 25seconds before midnight and the final deadline.

YOU are an Ironman!
This is truly an amazing event to witness!
These amazing individuals inspire the belief that you can do anything you set your mind to as long as you are willing to do the work.
The discipline you learn and character you build from setting and achieving a goal can be more valuable than the achievement of the goal itself.
The morning after the race thousands lined up to register for next years` event! The 2600 spots available for next year were sold out by 11am.
Now the training for next August 29th begins for all of them.
By the way, I will be away from August 24th to September 1st next year!
Maybe next year I will be one of those in the line up the day after?

Friday's Thoughts on Achieving Success
Friday thoughts . . .
Notes from books I’m reading on SUCCESS
SUCCESS & The Law of Connection
- Leaders touch a heart before they ask for a hand.
- Great Leaders and Communicators connect with their reps.
- Bad communicators - talk down. Good communication – means common ground, get onto common ground.
- In 55 minutes ask 93 questions
Speak with passion, ask lots of questions security, friend.
- You can’t move people to action before you connect with their heart.
9 ways to connect:
1- Connect with yourself FIRST. Be real
2- Share with openers and sincerity. Let them be openers so they will approach you.
3- Live your message
4- Know your audience. Know something about them.
5- Talk at their level. Look them in the eye.
6- Give yourself totally to the people and the message
7- Believe totally in the message and the people
8- Share how the message has touched you. They get you to take the trip with you. They are together with you. Offer direction and hope.
9- Always give them light at the end of the tunnel. Leaders are dealers in hope.
How well do I connect in Speaking:
Law of Solid Ground:
Trust: Foundation that hold the leader and the people together. It is what you build your leadership on.
Need character and needs confidence to build.
It’s not the biggest problem that causes you the problem, it is the last one.
Give back changes – give back less and slower. When you violate a trust relationship you loose it a lot quicker than you gained it.
After a while if doing it well, you are loaded with change.
Business people know their #’s
1. Keep track
2. Begin with the end in mind
3. Beginning must be just as big as your end. Otherwise you will think in such a way as will create limits.
4. Not about money- It’s about what your life can become.
5. The course is about big steps and the possibilities of your life. Until you can see the possible and plan for it then the possible for you is impossible.
“If I have seen farther than others it is because I have been standing on the shoulders of giants.” Issac Newton
When you think big you think narrow.
- Boredom of systematic consistency to reach highest heights. If you stay there long enough to success its not boring.
- Discipline to get to wealth, most take flexibility and freedom
- Act broadly as if you were climbing Mt. Everest.
- The size of your questions will determine the size of the answer.
- What will it take for me to climb to the highest point?
- Journey was astounding and you went further.
- Ramp it up!
Be on a course cause by circumstances, which you would have wished to have happened on purpose.
#1 in 1 year paid everything off!!!
Jump high, build big models, jump high and then get pulled along.
Don’t complicate it.
Success is not complicated, but most people get bored with the simplicity.
It’s an “I can conversation” every moment of everyday.
Here’s to our Best Week ever! Make a difference . . .

Secret to Success from the
“THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING”
Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it will achieve. Dream great dreams and make them come true. Do it now. You are unique. Never affirm self-limitations. What you believe yourself to be, you are. To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost – put foundations under them. Yes you can. You can always better your best. You don’t know that you can do until you do it. Nothing will come of nothing. If you don’t go out on a limb, you’re never going to get the fruit. There is no failure except in not doing anything. Hazy goals produce hazy results. Clearly define your goals. Write them down, make a plan for achieving them, set a deadline, visualize the results and go after them. Just don’t look back unless you want to go that way. Defeat may test you; it need not stop you. If at first you don’t succeed, do it another way. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. The greatest mistake is giving up. Wishing will not bring success, but planning, persistence and a burning desire will. Success is an attitude. Get yours right. It is astonishing how short a time it takes for very wonderful things to happen. Have a passion for positive thinking and there will be no room for the negative.
IMPACT YOURSELF!

Laughter – Our Subconscious Giveaway to our Mind Set
This week I thought about how much better I feel after laughing. I’ve heard that laughter heals the body from many ills including the damage of stress. I love to hear the infectious laughter of my youngest granddaughter, who seems to find everything to do with adult behavior quite funny. She sees humor in everything, including discipline.
Did you know that young children probably laugh the most? We first begin to laugh somewhere between 3.5 to 4 months of age, long before we’re able to speak. At ages 5 and 6, we tend to see the most exuberant laughs. Adults laugh less than children, probably because they play less. Laughter is associated with play. Thinking “playful” creates more opportunity for laughter. Researchers seem to agree - We don’t decide to laugh at these moments. Our brain makes the decision for us. These curious outbreaks of laughter are bits of social glue that bond relationships. Curiously, laughter seldom interrupts the sentence structure of speech. It punctuates speech. We only laugh during pauses when we would cough or breathe. I know from hearing my granddaughter laugh that laughter is social and contagious. I laugh at the sound of her laughter. That’s why the Tickle Me Elmo doll is such a success — it makes us laugh and smile. It is also why you find yourself smiling when you think of someone who does things on a regular basis that makes you laugh.
It’s obvious that humor is important to our everyday lives. It has been shown to help career advancement, speed up the healing process, reduce the risk of depression and heart disease and improve general coping skills. Humor helps us to deal with stressful or tense situations and gives us back some perspective to allow us to tackle the problems head on and get them all sorted out.
Contrary to folk wisdom, most laughter is not about humor; it is about relationships between people and other people, or people and their environment, or it might be about the relationship that a person has with themselves.
Andy Andrews www.andyandrews.com in his audio titled, “Baseball, Boys and Bad Words”, recognized that laughter traditionally requires a target. Picking on the weaker and fragile people around you isn’t going to be funny; in fact it could be devastatingly not funny. Your target either has to be a big strong, self assured person who may even throw the first humor assault at you or the target is yourself. He pokes fun at the adults in his life from the view point of a 10 yr old. He creates pictures in your mind – I get drawn into his stories. If you have not heard this story I’d be happy to play it for you. It brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.
Who creates more laughter in others – our right brained thinkers (creative, random, feely types) or our left brained (logical, analytical types)? I’d lay money on the people who look at life from different angles would find more ways to create pictures that are outside the box. Want to do an easy test to see if you are more right brained or left brained focused? Check this out:

I wonder if someone can be commanded to laugh? I can hear the teacher now, “On the count of 5, Red Group, commence laughing” I don’t think so based on the research that I did. Laughter comes from your subconscious and happens without thought.
Want to know the two main reasons we laugh?
#1 Tension and Release. Someone provokes us an emotional tension and then he releases us. This sudden release of tension provokes laughter. Laugher is activated like a steam gauge, where a buildup of feelings prompts an outburst. It's nature's way of releasing tension this buildup of emotions,
From a recent email I received:
I was in the pub yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to fart. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my farts with the beat.
After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my pint and noticed that everybody was staring at me.
Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.
#2 Perceived Incongruity. When you are surprised about something that normally should not exist, it will provoke laughter.

Friday thoughts . . .
This week I received sad news. A very good friend of mine was out for a summer afternoon with her daughter. Her daughter was driving and another car crossed the meridian and hit my friend’s vehicle head on. My friend and the driver of the other car died at the scene. Her daughter survived and was released from hospital later that day.
The good news is her daughter survived, the good news is that my friend didn’t suffer for days on life support; the good news is that my friend lived life at a very high level. Her career as a specialist was very successful. She was highly respected in her field. She was well loved, by all who knew her. She was a talented interior designer. She travelled the world. She was quite athletic, an avid skier and wind surfer and she always made me laugh when the most common things escaped her. She lived life fully and was always thinking what’s next. I found it impossible to comprehend that someone I had helped shop last Friday was gone. I dropped off cards and flowers at her home in Pitt Meadows. My mind was playing tricks on me. I almost didn’t leave the flowers and cards as I was wondering what she would be thinking as she read the cards because of course she was coming home from work that evening and everything was just a cruel joke. It wasn’t until her dad, a small, elderly, kind gentleman cried on my shoulder and I felt his pain did it really sink in and I knew that she really was gone from this life.
In my quiet time this week, as I garden or listen to the river, I cannot help but reflect on how abrupt death can be. Questions run rampant in my head. When the sand in the hour glass runs out and the games over what’s left? Where does your life fit in? What do you do to prepare for death? Did you live your life or did you live someone else’s? Does it matter whether you became all that you could be? And who judges? Will your impact in death be smaller or larger in life? How can you really be sure that you did what you set out to do? Was the “doing” that was important or was it the “being” that made the difference? How much of your life did you spend in each? If you knew the impact your life held for others would you live it differently? If you knew you could not fail – what would you do?
I came across this poem and wanted to share it with you:

When I watched this movie I thought of Hannah and the impact she made to my life over the past fifteen years and the love she showed all her friends. This Friday’s thought is dedicated to you Hania Binder 1956 – 2009. I love you, my friend.

Friday's Thoughts for July 10,2009
Friday thoughts . . .
A couple of days ago my granddaughter Olivia greeting me at the door (after work) with index cards in her hand. She told me she had a quiz to give me and proceeded to read out the instructions.
“Grandma, only answer yes or no – no maybes”, she instructed me.
Question #1. Compared with five years ago, is work now a regular part of evenings and weekends? Do you get irritated if family or friends interrupt work time? hmmm
Question #2. Has work squeezed out time in the community, time with family and exercise time? It's not just temporary; it's the new normal. Does my gradual turn around since RE/MAX count?
Question #3. Do you eat faster, talk faster, walk faster? And do you always feel as if you're “behind” – rushing to catch up? I’m a slow eater.
Question #4. Have back problems and other health issues surfaced because your body is rigid all day long? You can't sleep. I sleep when I’m tired – or was that exhausted? Just kidding.
Question #5. Is your concentration shot? Are you moody, have trouble communicating and are obsessed with small details because you've lost sight of the big picture? I do see the big picture – yeah!!
When she finished, I asked her where she got these questions. She replied, “The Globe and Mail –it was on the table and I read it while having my snack.” Then she looked up with a glint in her eye and announced, “Hey, I wonder what’s a shopaholic? Think they have a quiz? I’m going to google it.” Off she went.
Meanwhile, I wanted to know more. I googled and searched the Globe and Mail edition. Here is what I found.
How to differentiate between a workaholic and someone who's merely working hard.
Reality: There is no typical workaholic, Statscan studies show. Self-described workaholics are no more likely than non-workaholics to be young, highly educated, city dwellers or high-income earners. They are more likely to be in management and trades, be unhappy with their work/life balance – and twice as likely to report they work 50 hours a week or more.
Five warning signs: (Aha! This is Olivia’s source – she just changed up a few words )

How is it that this eleven year old was able to shake my world and make it better at the same time? The Law of Attraction, in its perfection, brought a teacher into my world exactly when I was ready to listen and take action. There is a distinct difference between becoming a master of my work and becoming a workaholic. I decided to do an internal check on my world and found out that over the years my world had shrunk. My centers of influence were fewer and the diversity of activities were at best, minimal. My associations were extremely limited and my focus was almost totally work oriented. I believe an “and” conversation can occur. I’m going to expand my centers of influence and improve my work. I’m going to continue to adjust my time to include more play, more hobbies, more exercise and a still be more effective at work. (Since switching to RE/MAX I have made a huge shift here already,2 holidays, weekends mostly at home gardening.) I’m moving forward on the pathway of the former rather than the latter.
How about you? Are you a Master of your Profession or a Workaholic?
Have a wonderful week!

PS. Education and Social Calendars will be out next week for the balance of the year. RE/MAX jerseys orders will be available next week and anyone with thoughts of attending the RE/MAX Canadian Convention in Banff this November there will be a sign up sheet so I can put hotel rooms on hold before they are sold out. You are the BEST! Thank-you for being part of my world!

Friday's Thoughts June 26
Friday thoughts . . .
Last week my thoughts were about creating a Painted Picture and how you lean into the future to reverse engineer everything you want in life. This week I’m sending you my first draft. Then we add the management, staff and agent's perspectives into this and create our Painted Picture for our Company.
My Painted Picture
– leaning out three years into the future – it is now 2012
Overall: My dreams unfold in front of my eyes. My companies are rated as the best places to work in Canada. Agents and staff want to work with us because we are so knowledgeable, supportive and fun. We are acknowledged within our franchise as leaders in our field. Our staff and agents are in alignment with our values, beliefs and especially our vision. It is always a “can do” attitude that prevails. We have the right people on the bus, in the right seats. Those who are no longer a “fit” are let go with respect and support. Our staff and agents go out of their way to appreciate and recognize each other. Through practicing this, they have become the staff and agents who are the most sought after in the industry. We are excited to go to work. It is a really fun place to be! The atmosphere in the offices inspires us all to think outside the box and to constantly improve. We are learning based – bringing in top instructors to teach. Our agents and staff deserve the best and we deliver it. Our offices are full and we have a waiting list. Money flows freely to all of us – we are money magnets. We have created ways to profit share with our agents through activities that will enhance their careers and fun activities. We have quarterly retreats where we review all our key attributes including our P & L’s and budget items and strategize for the future. We are accountable to helping everyone on the team succeed.
I spend time coaching and consulting rising stars. I am relaxed and in great health. I am pleased with my improving exercise program. I get to spend three – four days a week doing personal items because our work team is so dynamic.
Success: I am blessed everyday to have great people in my life and more coming into my life as we grow and build out our dreams in earth school. I am fully engaged in the success of the people I work with. I am building my world so large that all of us have success. I have the ability to attract the right people on the bus and in the right seats. This atmosphere is fuelled by love, compassion and a “can do” attitude. We are powered by successfully empowering our unlimited beliefs. Our staff’s support for the agents and ownership is the best in the industry. They have created the key environment for our agent’s success. I have a feeling of excitement inside. We are doing things that no one believed possible for this industry and we do them regularly. We now have over 250 agents in 5 offices. Our staff run the companies with the precision of a drill squad and with the love, patience and wisdom of a grandparent. I successfully have reduced my time inside my business down to three days allowing me to focus on other activities such as family, friends, my home, travelling, education, community events. I work and think 6 months into the future, yet live in a focused present. I have found success with my weight/ exercise routines and now create best health everyday.
How I feel: I look and feel happy and relaxed. I smile all the time. I am truly at peace with life. It feels great to make a difference in lives and to create a system that will perpetuate that in the real estate industry. I feel like I am in Disneyland. I love dropping in to the offices. Positivity surrounds me. I feel like I was born to do this work. I feel empowered and fully engaged. I feel like I have created a legacy that can be recreated over and over again.
Mentor Board of Advisors: I am learning and growing. I attract great teachers into my world. I communicate effectively the ideas and teachings that resonate with me to my staff and agents. We have focus groups who get together to sit like keepers of the vision and we work on best practices of implementation. I am being consulted by leaders in business. I also take the wisdom from business and cultural leaders who have written great books and recorded great DVD’s & CD’s. I network through several Social Networks such as Linked in and Facebook.
Culture & Spirit: Our culture engages the spirit to respond to life in a positive manner. We do not compromise our values. Our staff and agents are engaged and know that each makes a difference to the success of the company. We are learning based and accountable to our word, our principles, our values and our beliefs. We have high integrity and are prepared to do not just the legally right thing but also the morally right thing. We believe in win-win. Our conversations are about concepts and ideas. We brain storm perfect outcomes because we are outward focused. We want to grow our lives large. We all understand and use the power of daily written positive recognition with each other. We are grateful for our opportunities. My company’s spirit is a reflection of mine which is growing everyday in a positive way. We identify challenges quickly and outward focus to resolution. We understand the power of attraction. We help more people attain their dreams than any other real estate company. Our results create our image. Our hearts and our strategies drive the bus. We are skilled professionals. We make culturally based decisions. Agents and staff must grow to stay in culture

Our clients are attracted to us because of our successful sales results. We are smart negotiators. We have doubled our Market Share yearly. We are wealthy in our attitude, and our earning power is limitless. We pay it forward. Our personal as well as our work lifestyle is to leave things better than before. We set the benchmark for multi level success in a real estate company. We have a strong presence in our community and continually build and support the communities we live in.
Communication: I don’t mask the truth. I don’t delay the conversations that need to happen to move us forward. I do have respect and come from my heart when I have these conversations. I ask a lot of questions as I know that self discovery is the quickest teacher. We help each other see more than one color on the beach ball. We write down things worth communicating. We have weekly meetings to communicate successes and points in time. We acknowledge success and fill each other’s buckets on a regular basis. We are honest. We are concise, direct and respectful in our fierce conversations. We have developed systems to effectively listen when there is more than one idea to be communicated. We respect that communication skills can be developed.
Leadership: We believe in win-win. Our decisions are based on love not fear. Our staff and agents are driven to us because of our transparency. We are in a constant state of becoming. We strive to be the best and produce results without giving up what we stand for. Our principles, our values, our vision and our mission are our foundation. We focus time on developing our leadership skills within. We begin that leadership begins with leadership of self first. We are servant leaders to ourselves as well as each other and our clients. We model our leadership after great business leaders who are in alignment with our culture. Clients are attracted to us because we are well known as the best place to get help when looking to buy or sell real estate. Our leadership gets out of their own way, to see further down the journey. Our leadership stay in curiosity. Our leadership creates support not rescue. We celebrate success everyday.
Customer Service: We create “wow” positive experiences where ever we go. We are generous. We exceed our client’s experiences and we have the testimonies to prove it. We are outcome focused. We add the “human touch”. Our systems leave no one out.
Programs: We create timely educational events. We are a learning based
culture. Our programs are branded and copy written by our sister company. We now plan one year out. Our goals are completed and shared each December. We share our events calendars in December for the following year. All our systems are written down and implemented. Our staff buys in fully. Any changes are signed off by ownership prior to implementation. We are a transparent company. Other companies come to learn from us. We are always in touch with all our agents. Our programs run so smoothly that no one would know they are actually systems as they happen so naturally.
Systems: Are all written down and can be easily followed. They are implemented and working. They are changeable as long as the ideas have been approved in writing. Our systems are taught regularly. Mastery is rewarded. Our systems leverage our daily tasks.
Media: We spread the good word of our success as well as our community work on a regular basis. We regularly review our websites and social network activity. We acknowledge success. We actively use our corporate media presence to enhance our image and availability for new clients.
Profitability: I make a lot of money. I bring great value to a lot of people. I help a lot of other people make a lot of money. I love what I do. My income comes in from a series of passive income ventures and some ventures that are not so passive. I share my profits with staff and agents in ways that will enhance their lives and careers. My earnings increase by 50% every year. I am semi retired. My companies are all very profitable. We are exceeding our profit goals on a regular basis. We change our staff and agents lives through our unique profit sharing system. We regularly give back to our communities. Our administration is well run. Our books are clean and accurate.
Family & Friends: I live in abundance. I have many friends in my world and a few who are very close to me. My family comes before my business. I spend time each week with my family and invite people for Sunday dinners on a regular basis. We celebrate life often. We go on fun holidays together. I selectively choose to remove negativity from my life. I have learned that if they want to hold onto negativity then we are not in alignment. I also enjoy quiet time to myself where I can brainstorm and reflect.
Please send me your Painted Pictures as soon as you can. Creating your Painted Picture and sharing is a true win-win activity. You are the very BEST! Thank-you for being in business with RE/MAX results realty.

Brand/Image: We have taken a strong brand name in real estate and created, with our team, a focused environment for success based on unlimited beliefs and success attitudes. Our alignment with our franchise draws the success of the franchise towards us. We attend and support all our company’s and franchise’s functions. Friday's Thoughts June 19
Friday thoughts . . .
Have you ever concentrated on what you want your work life and work environment to look and feel like? Last week at our RE/MAX Broker Owner Retreat I had the opportunity to listen to a speaker who totally held my attention for almost two hours. I was mesmerized. This speaker spoke about the company culture I had dreamt about. His name was Cameron Herold, probably best know for his COO roles in Student Painters, 1-800 Got Junk & Boyd Auto Body and Glass. It felt to me as if the speaker was answering just my questions about what’s next and no one else was in the room. It was as if he saw my vision for our company and was helping me by filling in the details. He asked all the key questions. I could hardly type fast enough to take the notes I wanted to keep. In the movie The Secret, the message is have clear intention and the mechanism will show up. It begins with building a Painted Picture of what your world will look like three years from now. It is important to need to get your “future life” video out of your mind so that everyone can see it. Lean out three years into your business life and then come back and tell everyone else what you see. Design your future and then reverse engineer it. Build today through reverse engineering the future. Execute the plan to create the painted picture. When we figure out what it looks like in the future – we build a foundation. We then build through the people and we know strategically why we are doing something.
Our painted picture will layout the culture in our company and the people who will be involved and how. Our painted picture will attract people to our culture and will repel the people who are not in alignment. If you are looking for a work life, balanced culture, then that is the type of person who you will attract. The Painted Picture doesn’t tell how, it tells what. When we read it over and over the picture will come together. When the picture comes together magic happens! Then we will have an insanely great real estate company and change our worlds. The how will figure itself out. I have always known that the best way to accomplish this is to do it through alignment with everyone involved. ie everyone has seen the Sound of Music and if I asked you to recreate a picnic like the one on top of the mountain in the Sound of Music you could. If you hadn’t seen it you couldn’t do it the same as the movie. When everyone has the same vision, everyone gets involved & you build together - easily. Conceive Believe Achieve
My goal is to build a successful company with a strong work-life balanced culture. So as we add people into our company, we want to look for others who have a worklife balanced culture. The person’s worklife passion must be there. Each person is a piece of the puzzle. Some will fit and some will not. I want to be in business with people who are a match with our cultural balance and values, not necessarily a super top producer who’s value structure is not a match. You can’t keep the wrong people in your organization. We won’t attract great people who are in alignment with our culture if we allow it to be hit and miss.
Jim Collins, in his book Good to Great, said success is like the fly wheel effect. Mass x velocity is what makes a business move forward. You keep pushing and then eventually it moves faster with less effort. Here is the success formula to get fly wheel going:
Focus x faith x effort = results At the end of week how focussed were we ? Did we spend our time looking at our email or facebook or did we move our Top 5 goals ? Was it 50% or 80% of the week? How much faith did you have in your business? How much faith did you have in what you are building? How much faith did you have in you? How much effort did everyone put in? Was it 100%? Can you get to 98% focus in each category? He also says: “Get the right people on the bus, in the right seats on the bus.” Have an open environment – get people out of offices. It can still be productive and fun. If you need private quiet time, put your Bose head phones on. The younger generation would prefer to work in an open environment, instead of the sterile office environment. The new generation was taught to question things and to have fun.
I’ve included in the attachments some examples and notes. One is an example of a Painted Picture and all the information for you to create your own Painted Picture. Let me know your vision of what our company will look like and what your business will look like in three years. Let’s get our vision out there for what we want to do and how it will look.
Here’s a tiny example of what is in my vision: People’s photos, hobbies etc. will always be first before titles. We care about their lives. People don’t fail, systems do. We have a no blame environment. We have built our company so cool that the agents and staff are all hitting their dreams.
That’s it for this Friday Thought. Next week I’m going to set up a tour of the 1-800 Got Junk corporate office downtown – if you’d like to see what a #2 Work Place in all of Canada looks like – join me. I will keep everyone posted as to which Friday that will be. If you want to build a great business, team or company – it is always simpliest to model a great one. I am so excited about the opportunities ahead of us! I look forward to reading your Painted Pictures.
By next week our management team and our staff will have our Painted Pictures built.
You are the very BEST!

Friday's Thoughts May 22,2009
Friday’s Thoughts . . .
Wow! Disneyland and a week of huge learning and fun!
This is my first vacation in seven years. A mistake that I will not repeat. There are three distinct categories of time: work time, education time and play (recovery)time. Most of our early years are spent in play up until we become five or six, then we spend most of our day in school learning, as we become adults we move into spending most of our time at work and finally when we retire we begin to spend our time in play mode for as long as we have our health. More and more people are moving towards having all these different time categories occurring together. For the past seven years my life has been way out of balance. I spent much of it on a plane or in a classroom and the balance of it helping our agents and building a new franchise. I left little time for play. That doesn’t mean there was no play, it was just not in enough abundance. Lucky for me after 20+ years I still love my work. However this week I have a renewed experience about how valuable it is to take time to rejuvenate yourself. When you do that, you bring more energy to every other part of your life. Play time is very valuable. Spending time playing with my family this week has been amazing!
For those of you who I have the privilege to coach will know that I am a strong proponent of one day totally off a week and four days off in a row every six weeks plus a minimum of two holidays. I know that this recovery and rejuvenation time is critical for longevity and success in this business. I have no challenge pushing you hard to take time off because I know the benefits are huge. However, without a life coach myself – I focussed only on what I was coached on – building a profitable business. Creating play time is a focused activity that is purposeful in its intention to provide you with recovery and rejuvenation time. It is as important as work or education time in the benefits it brings. Play time needs to be written down in your day timer at the beginning of the year (or now for the balance of the year if you haven’t done so already). The rule is to write all these activities in pencil and what you erase – you replace somewhere in the balance of the year.
This week I have experienced what you give your focus to happens. We are powerful creators. I have watched Olivia (my granddaughter) literally will things to her. She shows up just at the right moment to get on rides. She was very clear each day prior to entering into Disneyland what rides she wanted to go on and in what order. She also set her mind on a few items at the gift store, (which are all now in her possession).
Being a systems maniac,I have always had a passion around Disneyland. After this trip I am absolutely impressed with the systems and the people involved in the Disney Experience. It’s the magic that is created when each guest’s experience has been beyond what they expected it would be. I learned through reading the book “Creating Magic” by Lee Cockerell (this week) that this magic doesn’t happen by accident. Every situation has been planned out. They have scripts for every situation. This book is fabulous and the strategies can be applied by anyone in business. Did you know that every employee of Disney learns scripts, role plays regularly and they take classes at the Disney Institute, over and over – until it is part of who they are? The employees are keenly aware of their direct impact on their coworkers and the guests. Business is business, whether its theme parks or real estate sales. It’s all about building relationships and learning all the dialogues to communicate at the highest level. The success of business is determined by the experience our client receives. It’s about mastering the basics and building upon them. It’s about the ability to focus fully on the key 20% that creates success and the ability to stay out of the “stuff”.
I’ve learned from my 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter that reality and dreams crossover. When we turned the corner and she saw Ariel and then Cinderella she believed without a doubt they were the real thing and not just a character on the DVD . Now, that she had spoken to them, they were real! When she put on the princess dress we bought her (which she wore for the next three days straight) she literally became a princess, too. I recognized just how important it is for all of us to connect and reconnect with the people who we do business with. Disney knows that once Audrey connected with the “real” Ariel, she will forever connect to Disneyland. It made me wonder what we create for our clients to always bring our names to the top of their minds when they think of real estate.
Finally, I’ve learned from my littlest granddaughter, Kristy that laughter makes every situation better. She has entertained her entire family on this trip, I’ve learned all the actions to The Wheels on the Bus, how to answer “Oh No” when she says “Oh Man!”. She has the ability to charm even the grumpiest of us with her smile and sparkly eyes. It’s all about her attitude. This 1 ½ yr old is an amazing communicator! She’s direct and honest. We always know exactly where we stand with her. There is no mask, if she’s tired we know, if she’s happy we know, if she’s afraid we know it. Makes me think about what I create in my life, with my attitude – Is it exactly what I want to consciously create - I hope so – because I am creating it, everyday in everyway.
Today is our last day in Disneyland. I wanted you to know that you were in my thoughts. I feel very blessed to have each of you in my business family. I hope you had a great week!
D eb
PS. Don’t forget about the Mastermind next week. Each month we bring in a successful agent so we can learn about their organizational models and strategies they have used to create their success. You won’t want to miss Ray Yenkana owner and mega agent of RE/MAX Little Oaks – guests are welcome, they just need to be registered.
PPS Don’t forget to gather your items for the “Yard Sale for the Cure”, next Saturday.
